A founder member of Briestfield WI, Violet Longbottom left Briestfield at Easter after almost 80 years.
Vi moved to the village in 1934 and immediately became involved in village life, helping out at the Methodist Chapel and Sunday School.
The preliminary meeting to discuss the setting up of a WI was held in the Chapel School Room on October 16th 1967 and Vi was elected Handicraft Secretary at the first full meeting held on November 20th.
Living alone at 97 she had found it difficult to get out and about especially with the wintry weather and lack of a village bus service and made the decision to move to live with her daughter in Leicestershire. She was presented with a framed poem depicting her home and beloved chapel by the local history and community group and a framed photograph of the members of Briestfield WI.
Violet will be greatly missed by everyone but we wish her well with her family in her new home.
