Congratulations to Durkar Women's Institute! Thanks to Wakefield Council's Community Chest Fund, the group have been able to purchase a new electric keyboard which will benefit a number of local organisations. Members of the WI went along on Thursday 27th June 2013 to Agbrigg and Belle Vue Community Centre in Wakefield to collect a certificate commemorating the award. They were also presented with a Community Champion Award, which Mrs Jean Newton, President, was pleased and suprised to accept on behalf of her fellow members. Mrs June Drysdale, local councillor for the Durkar area, had nominated the WI in recognition of their hard work and dedication on behalf of others. Several local organsations have benefited from the fundraising efforts of Durkar WI since it was formed 43 years ago.
As well as supporting the local church, where the WI meets each month, there are ongoing efforts to enhance the appearance of the surrounding area by contributing towards the provision and upkeep of hanging baskets throughout the village and a bulb planting scheme has been successfully carried out. Nimble fingered members have created blankets, hats, scarves and other knitted and crocheted items for hospices, residential homes and hospitals and their latest venture is knitting Teddies for Tragedies! The Yorkshire Air Ambulance Service also continues to receive financial support from Durkar WI.
