ASIAN HORNET ALERT

We have been asked to alert WI members to the threat posed be the Asian hornet (Vespa veluntina).  The Asian hornet is a specialist predator of honey bees and other beneficial insects and is not yet on UK shores.
Since is was accidently introduced to France it has rapidly extended its geographical range to Spain, Portugal and Italy.  There is a high risk that it will arrive in the UK shortly.
Suspected sightings should be reported by email to alertnonnative@ceh.ac.uk
Further details, including an ID sheet can be found at
https://secure.fera.defra.gov.uk/beebase/index.cfm?pageld=208
Under no circumstances should an active hornet's next be disturbed or provoked.
